When dry eye symptoms keep returning despite artificial tears or at-home remedies, it may be time to look beyond temporary moisture. At Iowa EyeCare, we offer advanced dry eye treatments that address factors contributing to chronic irritation. Combining Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy with Low Level Light Treatment (LLLT) allows us to approach dry eye from multiple angles, particularly when meibomian gland dysfunction and inflammation are involved.
A healthy tear film needs more than water. The meibomian glands along the eyelids produce oils that help prevent tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become blocked or stop working properly, patients may develop meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD.
MGD can contribute to burning, redness, fluctuating vision, grittiness, excessive tearing, and persistent dryness. Lubricating drops may temporarily make the eyes feel better, but they do not necessarily address poor oil gland function or underlying inflammation. Evaluating the cause of dry eye helps us develop a more targeted treatment plan.
Our MDElite iProX IPL therapy uses controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light around the eyes. This non-invasive treatment is designed to reduce inflammation and improve the function of the oil-producing meibomian glands.
IPL may help patients with MGD by supporting a healthier tear film and reducing inflammatory processes around the eyelids. Treatments typically take only a few minutes and require little to no downtime.
Low Level Light Treatment uses specific wavelengths of gentle light applied to the eyelids. The light stimulates cellular activity and supports the body's natural healing processes. LLLT is designed to reduce inflammation and help improve meibomian gland function. It is non-invasive, painless, and can be particularly useful for patients whose dry eye is associated with MGD or blepharitis.
IPL and LLLT use different types of light energy, allowing each treatment to address dry eye in a complementary way. Depending on your eye health and the cause of your symptoms, a treatment plan may focus on:
• Reducing inflammation around the eyelids and ocular surface
• Supporting healthier meibomian gland function
• Improving the oil layer of the tear film
• Reducing excessive tear evaporation
• Providing more sustained relief from burning, redness, and irritation
Not every patient with dry eye needs the same combination of treatments. A dry eye evaluation allows us to identify contributing factors and determine which therapies are appropriate for your needs.
Persistent dry eye can have several causes, which is why we focus on treating more than the symptoms alone. Advanced treatments such as IPL and LLLT provide additional options when conventional approaches are not providing enough relief.
