Back-to-school season often means more time spent reading, completing homework, and using laptops, tablets, and other digital devices. For children with myopia, or nearsightedness, these visually demanding routines can make it especially important to monitor changes in their vision. At Iowa EyeCare, we help families take a proactive approach with myopia management designed to do more than simply correct blurry distance vision.
Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long, causing distant objects to appear blurry. It often begins during childhood and can continue to worsen as the eyes grow. While genetics can play a role, children's visual habits also matter. Long periods of near work and increased time using digital devices may be associated with myopia development and progression.
During the school year, parents may notice signs such as:
• Squinting to see the board or objects across the room
• Sitting closer to the television or moving screens closer
• Complaining about blurry distance vision
• Frequently needing stronger glasses prescriptions
• Having difficulty seeing during sports or other distance-based activities
Because children may not realize their vision has changed, regular pediatric eye exams are important for identifying myopia early.
Traditional prescription glasses can help a child see clearly, but standard single-vision lenses are generally designed to correct existing nearsightedness rather than slow its progression.
Myopia management takes a different approach. The goal is to provide clear vision while also helping reduce how quickly myopia worsens as a child grows. Slowing progression is important because higher levels of myopia are associated with greater risks for certain eye conditions later in life.
At Iowa EyeCare, we can recommend a myopia management plan based on your child's prescription, age, eye health, lifestyle, and individual needs.
MiSight 1 day contact lenses are daily disposable soft contact lenses designed to correct nearsightedness while helping slow myopia progression. Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, uses specialized contact lenses worn overnight to temporarily reshape the cornea, allowing clear vision during the day without glasses or daytime contacts.
Essilor Stellest lenses provide another option for children who prefer glasses. These specialized eyeglass lenses correct blurry vision while using a specific lens design to help slow myopia progression. Low-dose atropine eye drops and soft multifocal contact lenses may also be recommended for certain children.
Along with professional myopia management, simple habits can support children's visual comfort. Encourage regular breaks from close-up work, create opportunities for outdoor time, and make sure screens are used at a comfortable working distance.
Most importantly, do not rely only on whether your child says they can see clearly. Regular eye exams allow us to monitor prescription changes and determine whether additional myopia control may be appropriate.
