Cataracts are a clouding of the intra-ocular lens, which is located just behind the colored part of the eye. Cataracts may cause blurred vision, glare, yellowing of the vision, image ghosting, and more. When vision is impaired by a cataract, surgery may be required. Many types of cataracts exist. Iowa EyeCare specializes in the diagnosis of all cataracts.
The most common cataract is called nuclear sclerosis. Nuclear sclerosis is often associated with age and chronic sun exposure. The best way to prevent this type of cataract is to include UV protection in your spectacle lenses and wear sunglasses when your outdoors.
Head trauma can sometimes lead to traumatic cataracts and can occur right away or even many years after the event. Always undergo a comprehensive eye exam immediately following any kind of head trauma. Problems with the eye, including retinal detachment, optic neuritis or cataract may occur even though you may not have any symptoms.
Some individuals are born with cataracts, we call these congenital cataracts. Congenital cataracts can cause severe problems with normal eye development and that is why the doctors at Iowa EyeCare recommend having your child examined at 6 months of age.
